The History of Sandcastle Day

When a tsunami washed out the bridge into Cannon Beach in 1964, residents were relatively isolated until a new bridge was built.  That very spring, families from around the community gathered for a sandcastle contest to entertain their children.  Each year since, the event has attracted visitors and has grown to become one of the largest sand building competitions on the West coast.

This unique event draws sandcastle enthusiasts from around the world.  From casual spectators and sand dabblers, to competitive teams; everybody shares in the fun of this funky art form.  On the morning of the contests numbers of sand sculptures, castles and drawings are constructed from the "singing sands" on the Cannon Beach shore.  After the awards are presented in each category level, the creations can be enjoyed by all until the tide rolls in and takes the sculptures to the watery grave.

The contest rules are as simple as possible.  No themes are mandated. Subject matter for the sand sculptures blossoms from the imaginations of the builders.  Each contestant or team, is given a plot of sand within a cordoned viewing area.  Sand may not be added or removed from the assigned plot.  Only natural materials, such as seaweed, sticks, shells or rocks may be used as ornamentation.  Contestants are organized into divisions by age, individual or team, and skill level.
